Stapleton Development Closes Gap On Open Spaces In East Denver

DENVER (News 4) - As the city develops the old Stapleton Airport, houses are filling up the landscape around The Urban Farm. The farm is just south of I-70 at Havana and Smith road.

But farm organizers see the development as an opportunity.

Ananda Garcia has been riding at The Urban Farm for about 5 years.

"It's great," she told News 4.

At the farm, Garcia gets the full riding experience complete with saddling her own horse.

"Here you learn to bond with your horse because you're the one taking care of it," she said.

In the arena, the students practice handling the horses but it's out on the trail Garcia feels most at home in the saddle

"When you run up the hills you just have to let go of the reigns and let the horse go. And it takes off and then that's it. It's like you have to trust your horse so entirely," she explains.

The wide-open spaces that Garcia and the other riders are used to seeing out on the trail will soon be filled with the development at Stapleton.

Urban Farm organizers look at the new residents as an opportunity. "I think there's a learning curve that we'll have to get on to help them learn how to work with us," Urban Farm founder Khadija Haynes explains.

But riders like Ananda Garcia hope that some of what she's come to love can be preserved.

"That they leave Sand Creek alone. And you know that they don't interact with the wildlife and get too involved with that so that the wildlife doesn't go away. Because it's really amazing to have all the wildlife here," Garcia said.

Urban farm organizers say that Stapleton developers have been working closely with them to make the changes as smooth as possible.
