Tax Credit Basics

Income Limits (eff. Nov 7, 2009): $125,000 – single / $225,000 married. Additional $20,000 phase out. There is no minimum income for claiming the credit. If you don’t owe any taxes, you can receive your credit as a check from the government.
Limit on Cost of Purchased Home (eff. Nov 7, 2009): $800,000
Purchase Deadline: You must sign a purchase contract no later than April 30, 2010 and close by July 1, 2010.
You can claim the credit when you file your 2009 or 2010 tax return – or, if you’d rather not wait, file an amended 2008 or 2009 return and receive the money upon purchasing your home. There are also programs that will advance the money to help on your down payment.
